Action Research for & by Instructors: Update for Fall Semester

As we progress through the Fall Semester in our research strand, we’ve successfully navigated critical steps in planning the action research process in five sessions.

In the initial Welcome and Introduction session, participants were introduced to the program, laying the groundwork for the upcoming journey. The first session of the course delved into the foundational aspects of research approaches and action research. As part of the pre-task, participants read key chapters by Creswell (2023), Burns (2009), and Mills (2014), which prompted them to consider their research stance and approach. In the post-task activities, participants were encouraged to identify a research focus through the “Find My Topic” activity.

Moving forward, Session 2, focused on Research Questions, unfolded. Readings from Burns (2009), Creswell (2023), and Dikilitaş & Griffiths (2017) provided participants with the necessary background to formulate effective research questions. The post-task involved drafting research questions and submitting them for review. The first draft of research questions provided participants with the opportunity to provide and receive feedback from colleagues and to revise them as necessary. We then proceeded to Session 3, which focused on crafting an introduction and purpose statement. During the selection process, Creswell’s (2023) insights were used to guide the participants in selecting a research approach that would be most appropriate for their research question. The post-task included writing and submitting the introduction for review.

During the final session of the strand, the focus was on conducting and drafting literature review. Literature review pre-task readings by Burns (2009), Creswell (2023), and Mills (2014) provided a roadmap for conducting an effective literature review. The post-task activities consisted of a comprehensive set of tasks, culminating in the completion and submission of a literature review, which is an ongoing task for the participants.

Throughout the research strand, participants progress through structured steps at their own pace, and the strand encourages participants to carry out the outlined tasks at their own pace.  We look forward to the upcoming research sessions with a strong collaborative momentum, tailored to each participant’s unique pace and progress.
